Peata Melbourne
Peata Melbourne owns Te Koru Media and is a team of creatives who are bringing stories to life through 5 platforms of art; theatre, film, television, print and music.
In February 2020 Te Koru Media presented Provocation at the Herald Theatre in Auckland - a groundbreaking play about the gay panic defence and an unjust period in Aotearoa's legal history. Directed by Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year and award-winning actress, Jennifer Ward-Lealand, written by award-winning writer Aroha Awarau and award-winning music producer Peata Melbourne, the play sold-out on opening night.
In 2021 the same creative team made Disrupt, a short film partially in te reo Māori that explores the devastation that methamphetamine has on a whānau and follows an elderly Māori woman's desperation to help her grandson overcome his addiction. The film screened at 11 film festivals around the world, winning 3 awards including top award at the Puerto Rico Annual Film Festival in 2022.
A big part of Te Koru Media's work ethic is built on the taina-tuakana structure, developing and nurturing the next generation of artists by providing internships during production and mentoring newcomers to the industry.
Peata, Jennifer and Aroha are the core creatives of the company, and the broader team of both established and newbies to the industry includes graphic designers, editors, writers, directors, photographers, DOPs, lighting specialists and actors.
