Help make Photobook/NZ a success!
Photobook/NZ | Visual Art
Wellington Te Whanganui-a-Tara
The Project
Photobook/NZ is Aotearoa’s only national photobook festival and is an event celebrated in the arts calendar, bringing together an audience of book lovers, photographers, artists, publishers and gallerists on a biennial basis. Our scope is national and international, drawing a wide-ranging audience that includes a fast-growing younger sector.
The festival is an accessible hub for Aotearoa’s photobook artists to market their publications, develop a national audience, make international connections, learn new skills, be inspired and network. This is our sixth event.
The Team
The festival has been operating since 2016 as a partnership between Te Papa, Massey University and PhotoForum. It’s organised by a team of six independent photographers.
We are: David Cook, Mary Macpherson, Gabrielle McKone, Jane Wilcox, Harry Culy and Mckayla Woodroffe.
Our practice includes making and publishing photobooks, teaching, exhibiting and travelling to art fairs. We love the medium!
The Funding
We’re super grateful for a grant from Creative New Zealand but we need to raise another $4,000 to make the event successful. We’ll use the money to:
- keep events free or very low cost so that everyone can participate
- pay our presenters and workshop leaders fairly for their skills and time
- pay airfares to bring exciting guests and books to the Festival
- make sure our team is supported for the work and time they put into organising the event
The Details
This year we’re planning a festival at Te Papa from 6 – 9 August packed with events.
There’ll be:
- Exciting international guests including Martha Naranjo Sandoval, Erin Lee, Matt Dunne & others
- Opportunities to meet guests one-on-one to discuss projects
- Workshops including a new series for rangatahi from schools
- The fabulous bookfair where in 2024 artists and small presses earned over $20,000
- A host of photography events at galleries and libraries around Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington
