The Project
Inbetween Nowhere and Everything is a bold, original piece of theatre premiering at BATS in Wellington from 7th-11th July. It's a play about space cowboys. Cowboys. In space.
We are a big team, with a big dream and we are crowdfunding to mitigate the production costs associated with creating a unique, important piece of original theatre and making it look truly "out of this world"!
The Team
In The Mo' Theatre Co is a young team of emerging, Wellington-based creatives. We are constantly amazed by the calibre of everyone on this team, they are all superstars in their respective fields. Many of us are current students or recent graduates from theatre programmes at Te Herenga Waka and Te Auaha and have been involved in multiple award-winning productions.
As a team we pride ourselves on a shared vision and passion to reach our goals. We aspire every day to take our well-versed and diverse experience into motion by making art together - and with this show, we have found a creative goldmine that we all can't wait to make the best it possibly can be.

The Funding
As we said before, this is a big show, with a big team and a big dream. It is currently entirely self-funded. Ticket sales alone will get us some of the way to fulfilling this dream, but in order to get over the line we need your help. We are crowdfunding to assist with the following costs:
- A show set in space needs to be able to transport the audience. We are building an escape pod set from scratch and need money to cover the materials to get it looking truly out of this world...
- In a show like this, where the characters never leave the stage, the costumes are not just garments, they need to tell the story of their past lives and experiences. We need more than a shoestring to make this happen.
- Marketing including poster campaigns, sponsored ads and fliers. Publicity for a show doesn't come cheap, but we believe this is a show that needs to be seen by as broad an audience as possible, and we want to do it right.
- Paying our incredible team... everyone knows that theatre practitioners do it for the love, not the money, and our team is no exception, but we'd like to be able to pay them a share of any profits at the end. We really need your help to make this happen!
The Details
Inbetween Nowhere and Everything is aesthetically, a story about “space cowboys”—thematically, it’s an atmospheric tale about isolation and connection. As a Western, it plays upon the traditional tropes of the old west; identity, survival, and camaraderie - but through a science fiction lens, set in a distant and fantastical future where stardust is fuel and war is a constant.
Amidst this conflict, we follow three strangers, a Lover (Alex Quinn), a Killer (Zoe Harris) and a Nobody (Simon Ulm) as they find shelter within an escape pod and are flung into the deepest recesses of empty space, far from any soul or star.
We share in their experience, floating through a haunting and isolating world, and watch as they start to find solace in each other, sharing their cowboy songs and stories around the proverbial campfire. We learn about their past lives and self-imposed purposes for living, and are introduced to a fourth character, the enigmatic and shadowy THEM (Miren Welsh Ahipene Duffin).
Slowly, we begin to realise that these three strangers lives may not be as distant as they first thought, and that soon, they may have to decide who they will be when their backs are against the wall...
Inbetween Nowhere and Everything is a naturalist play and a traditional “characters stuck in a room” story. The three leads remain on stage at all times. Their “escape pod” encompasses only a small section of the stage, whilst the rest is empty, to invoke a certain sense of claustrophobia and an essence of being “trapped.” This boundary is broken as the characters tell their stories and head into this empty space, their memories giving a reprieve from the bleakness of their plight . Each story is told differently—a song, a dance, and a traditional monologue—and each provides something new to the experience.
Legendary Aotearoa playwright Gary Henderson described this play as “a kind of strange otherworldly meditation on the luck of the draw.” It’s a story about love, loss, and hoping against hope for a better future... even when the stars have gone out.
The Impact
This is a show about humanity and connection, how chance encounters with others can easily turn from a ripple, to a tsunami. It's a show about the whims of fate and chance, and how we may try as hard as we can to fight against these threads. It's also about one's identity and place in their own story, and about the choices we can make in how these stories find their end.
Simply put, the themes are so broad and so impactful that we can see it appealing to a vast range of people from different ages and backgrounds. The realm of science fiction can be used to discuss many topics and issues that ail our modern society, and we hope that this humble tale of four cowboys among millions can touch hearts and spark minds.
It is also a show with a bright future. This is only the development season, but we know it has the potential to go much further and possibly tour to other theatres in other cities. By investing in this show, you're helping making it the best it can possibly be, and you are a part of this future. Thank you so much.
