The Project
The NIU Choir from Bishop Viard College is on a mission to represent our community, our culture, and New Zealand at the 2026 Australian International Music Festival in Sydney. From 5 July to 12 July, 31 of our talented young Pasifika creatives (aged 12–18) will take the stage at the iconic Sydney Opera House and Verbrugghen Hall, participating in adjudicated performances and professional workshops alongside some of the best youth ensembles in the world.
This tour is the culmination of a high-stakes pathway for excellence grounded in our BVC MPPA (Music, Performing Arts, Pasifika) Vision. It is more than just a performance; it is about providing our rangatahi with a global stage to showcase their artistry while being nurtured through our unique Whānau Lead model, which ensures cultural and spiritual safety throughout the journey.
The Team
We are a collective of educators and artists from Bishop Viard College in Porirua, dedicated to creating pathways for excellence through our MPPA (Music, Performing Arts, Pasifika) Vision. Our practice is rooted in the belief that music is not just a performance, but a vessel for culture, faith, and identity for our rangatahi.
The NIU Choir is guided by a dedicated team of six staff members who bring a wealth of experience across musical direction, logistics, and pastoral care. Our team is led by Pasifika staff working alongside colleagues who are deeply passionate about our students' cultural success. This group includes:
- Two Music Directors: Shaping the vibrant, harmonious sound that defines the NIU Choir.
- Specialist Leads: Dedicated staff managing logistics, fundraising, communications, and health and safety.
Who Is Behind Us? Behind this choir is a powerful movement of families and community. We operate under a unique "Whānau Lead" model, where our staff mentors nurture small student groups, ensuring cultural and spiritual safety is at the heart of everything we do.
Since September 2025, our "behind the scenes" team has extended to the parents and wider Porirua community who have tirelessly organised BBQs and concerts to help us raise $35,000 to date.
We are also incredibly proud to have the support of Creative New Zealand through the Boosted X Moana partnership. When you support us, you aren't just funding a trip; you are joining a dedicated village that is committed to seeing these 31 talented students shine on the world stage.
The Funding
To ensure complete transparency for our supporters, here is a breakdown of how the funds from this campaign will be used. Your donations directly bridge the remaining gap for our 31 students, covering:
- Festival Registration & World-Class Venues: Full registration for the Australian International Music Festival, including the prestigious opportunity to perform at the Sydney Opera House and Verbrugghen Hall.
- Professional Musical Development: Private faculty workshops with international clinicians and adjudicated performance sessions to provide our students with expert feedback and growth.
- Safe & Central Accommodation: Seven nights of group accommodation at the Ibis Styles Sydney Central, ensuring our rangatahi are safe and together in the heart of the city.
- Daily Meals & Nutrition: Provision of daily group breakfasts and scheduled tour meals to keep our performers healthy and energised.
- Supervised Transport & Logistics: Opal cards for seven days of supervised travel on Sydney’s transport network, deluxe coach airport transfers, and the support of an on-the-ground Tour Manager.
- Cultural & Educational Experiences: Admission to key sites for cultural exchange and learning, including Taronga Zoo, a Sydney Harbour Cruise, and a guided tour of the historic Rocks district.
- Professional Media & Equipment: Hire of essential performance equipment (choral risers) and professional festival recordings of our students' performances to bring back home to our community.
By reaching our goal, we ensure that the $4,550-per-student cost is not a barrier to excellence, allowing every member of the NIU Choir to stand proud on the international stage.
The Details
The NIU Choir’s Sydney Tour is much more than a series of performances; it is a dedicated "pathway for excellence" for 31 young creatives. By taking our students to the 2026 Australian International Music Festival, we are placing them in an environment that demands and celebrates high-level artistry.
What we are doing: Our itinerary is designed to challenge and inspire. The choir will perform at the iconic Sydney Opera House and the Verbrugghen Hall (Sydney Conservatorium of Music). Beyond the spotlights, the students will participate in adjudicated workshops with international clinicians and engage in cultural exchanges with youth ensembles from across the globe. This exposure to professional standards and diverse musical traditions is transformative for young artists.
Why we are doing it: We believe that our Pasifika rangatahi deserve to see themselves on the world’s most prestigious stages. This project is built on three core pillars:
- Identity and Belonging: Performing our music in international venues reinforces to our students that their culture and voices have immense value on a global scale.
- Aspirations Beyond the Classroom: For many of our students, this is their first time travelling overseas. It expands their horizons, showing them that a career or life in the creative arts is a tangible reality.
- Community Resilience: This tour is the result of years of grassroots effort. By overcoming the financial and logistical hurdles together, we are proving what is possible when a community operates with a shared vision of Whanaungatanga.
We are doing this because we know that when these 31 students return to Porirua, they won't just bring back memories—they will bring back a renewed sense of leadership, confidence, and pride that will ripple through our school and community for years to come.
Why we need your help: The total cost of this life-changing experience is $4,550 per student. Since September 2025, our families and students have shown incredible commitment, raising $35,000 through local concerts, BBQs, and disciplined personal savings plans. We are now in the final stretch to bridge a $20,000 gap.
Through Boosted X Moana, every dollar you donate will be matched (up to our goal), meaning your $50 becomes $100. Your support will directly fund travel and festival registration, ensuring that every one of our 31 students—regardless of their financial circumstances—can stand tall in Sydney and let their voices be heard.
The Impact
Our community should back us because this project is a "living example" of what we can achieve when we pull together. For nearly a year, our families have sacrificed time and finances—raising $35,000 through pure grit and grassroots effort—to ensure our rangatahi have this opportunity.
By backing this project, you are:
- Investing in Leadership: These 12–18-year-olds are learning discipline, resilience, and the value of hard work. They will return as mentors for the next generation.
- Breaking Barriers: You are helping us ensure that "cost" is not the reason a talented child stays home. You are helping us level the playing field.
- Strengthening our Village: This tour validates the BVC MPPA Vision. It tells our students that their community believes in their talent enough to send them to the world’s biggest stage.
We have done the heavy lifting and raised the majority of the funds ourselves. We are now simply asking for that final "boost" to get us across the finish line. When our choir sings in Sydney, they sing for everyone who helped them get there.
