The Project

Orange is a original play written by Carys Long. It tells the story of a supermarket worker who realises that the place shes been working her whole life is not all it seems to be.

We are seeking some support to ensure that this first season of Oranges is able to look and sound as beautiful as the script and cast!

The Team

'Biscuit Tin' is a freshly baked batch of biscuits hot and ready to be consumed. Aftering proofing in the fridge (of Unitecs acting program) for three years these casts and creatives are ready for the industrial oven to bake us till we are golden brown and ready for the public to feast on us. The company is made up of a small group of like minded creative people who all met during their time studying. Our guiding focus is creativity; we want to make work that takes risks and pushes not only our perception of the world and theatre but also the audiences.

Our team for 'Oranges' is comprised of 4 actors (Kirsty, Quinn, Lucas and Shakana) and Carys who originally wrote the show and is now taking up the role of producer and director.

The Funding

Unfortunately putting on a theatre show is expensive and even though we have been lucky enough to secure a spot in basement theatres winter/matariki season there is still a number of costs.

This is Oranges first staging so we are starting from 0. This means that we need to source all costumes, set and props. We would use any money raised to help support that process.

We would also love to use the funds raised to give back to the cast and creatives. A lot of volunteered time has and will be given in order to support this Oranges season and we would love to give a something back to the people who are making this show happen. Using these funds means that no matter the outcome of the show we are able to show our appreciation to those behind 'Oranges'.

The Details

'Oranges' is a work written by Carys Long in 2024 during her time studying acting at Unitec. It was originally written with the intention of just being for a table read but after a very positive reception it has been developed into a longer form and more practical piece of work. 2 years on from its conception it is finally ready to face the world. The piece has been described as 'Quirky' and 'Buzzy' by audience members.

The story follows 'Clementine' who has been working at the checkouts since the dawn of time. She clocks in, scans groceries, goes for her break at 1:30, scans more groceries and then clocks out. But when her co-worker gets into an argument and doesn’t return from the office she’s forced to break from this routine and journey into the depths of the supermarket through  bathrooms and back rooms only to find out that the produce she’s been selling is not what it seems…

The Impact

We believe 'Oranges' is one of those shows that will sit with you long after the seasons end; it is about so much more than just a supermarket worker finding her co-worker. It's a story that starts its life in the mundanity of everyday life and flips that on its head exploring themes of corporate greed and consumerism.

Oranges is the result of three years of dedication to the performing arts. The cast and creatives behind it are so passionate about this project and want nothing more than to share it with a wider audience. With your support you are helping to make this work possible and ensure that our show has as much potential as possible to grow as big as possible.
