Osetra
Lucy-Rose McClimont | Film
Canterbury Waitaha
The Project
The film delves into the operations of an illegal cosmetic surgery practice running from the backseat of a car.
Osetra is a hilarious, peculiar short film toying with cosmetic obsession. A sharp script accompanied by a uniquely troubled set of characters, Osetra is ready to alarm and amuse its audience. With deeper themes of body autonomy and the effects of hegemonic masculinity, perhaps it’ll even make you ponder!

The Funding
Boosted is an all or nothing platform, if we do not reach our goal by our closing date it all gets refunded and we receive nothing.
Where is your donation going?
- Towards feeding our team, our cast and crew are super talented but they do need to eat proper meals
- Towards our art department budget, so we can execute our concept of a faux-luxury surgical aesthetic
- Hiring lenses, our DoP has a vision!
- Being able to give our actors a little something
- Transport
Every small amount is appreciated by us, and if you can’t donate we completely understand but just ask that you please share our campaign around if you can.
We are lucky enough to be able to use some equipment through the University of Canterbury as we are a part of the first cohort to complete a Bachelor of Digital Screen with Honours.
The Details
The idea easily fell into the genres I’m currently most interested in making. It’s absurd, comedic, with horror elements. This feels like an extension of the previous projects I’ve made. I felt a drive to make this film as it feels fitting for the content to use experimental shots, heavy art department and a unique sound mix. All things I want to develop further. – Meg Armstrong (director)
Meg and Lucy-Rose are doing the set design, props and costuming for Osetra. Art direction is a passion of ours and unique set design and handcrafted props will be a key element of this film. Focusing on having sustainability at front of mind as well as keeping costs low, we are sourcing what we can second hand.
We are the first group to be graduating with this degree and are grateful to be able to use the incredible resources we have at hand in our final year. We are currently in preproduction and are planning to shoot late July.
The Impact
Osetra is reflective of the current wave of looksmaxxing and the effect of the manosphere on young men. We have specifically chosen to tell this tale through the perspective of a woman, as these same pressures have been crushing women for centuries.
We are a group of young filmmakers eager to share our creativity with the world and prove what we can do with a small budget and limited time-frame. We have done it before and have the ability to really prove our skills and step up our game this year. With this money we can do so much and it would truly mean the world to us!
