The Project

Support The Rebel Alliance 2026 taking 'Watching Paint Dry' to Copenhagen in May and touring 'The Valentina' in late 2026.

We have secured most of the funding to make all this happen and just need to find the last $10,000 to make all of it happen!

The Team

The Company

The Rebel Alliance is an independent Auckland based theatre company. Founded in 2026 we have to date presented 11 works, 8 of which have been premieres of new New Zealand plays.

Often solidly planted in real life the works we present prove that truth often surpasses fiction.  Extraordinary life stories can move, provoke and inspire; they put your own life into perspective.

The Funding

The money will go towards production costs and paying our artists.

The Details

Last year we got a grant from CNZ for a year’s worth of activities, which included doing a showcase presentation at the PANNZ arts market; touring Watching Paint Dry to the CPH Stage festival in Copenhagen and remounting and touring The Valentina to three cities.

We didn't' get all the money that we asked but through some budget brutality and the very lucky arrival of a Bruce Mason Award we have closed part of the gap. But... we are still a bit short.

The Rebel Alliance has two key goals for 2026:

Touring to CPH Stage in Denmark  will allow us to continue to develop pathways for artistic exchange between Scandinavia and New Zealand.

This will be our third visit to the Nordics. In 2023 we performed Back to Square One? in Copenhagen and the year after in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Århus.  In the last two years, 3 arts leaders from Denmark have visited PANNZ, which has led to opportunities opening up for other New Zealand companies. We believe there is strong potential in Scandinavia for both us AND the wider NZ performing arts sector. The Rebel Alliance is happy to lead the charge because someone's gotta do it!

2)      Remounting The Valentina positions it for further touring in 2027 and beyond. It's a great show that was created with significant investment from our two partners Auckland Live and Te Aruhei Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Arts Festival. Following the premiere we got lots of interest but without funding to back us we weren't able to follow through on them. Now we can!

We have been in conversation with an international agent, who has expressed interest in representing The Rebel Alliance. This has been something I’ve been pursuing for the last couple of years and The Valentina might just be the show that will get that one across the line.

The Impact

The Rebel Alliance turned 20 this year and we believe we are turning a corner as a company.

We have spent the last couple of years building an international profile and that work is now starting to pay off. We are determined to leverage of this to help open the door for those of our artistic colleagues who have capacity and appetite for working internationally. Scandinavia is our point of difference so that's the market we're gunning for!

  • A key motivator for us is in our name! We want to build alliances both at home and abroad.
  • 'Watching Paint Dry' is highly experimental and utterly unique. 'The Valentina' is family friendly crowd pleaser. They are var far from each other on the spectrum of theatre but it shows the breadth of the work we make.
  • Touring is vital for making a career in the arts sustainable. If we can push our work out there and along the way help open the doors for other New Zelaand companies then we've achieved our goal.
