Day One Hāpai te Haeata is a nationwide initiative that removes barriers for emerging screen storytellers to share their perspectives on issues that matter. Through free programmes, hands-on workshops, industry mentorship, and funded short film production, we support rangatahi and emerging filmmakers who have faced barriers to creative participation, whether that's age, experience, geography, socioeconomic circumstances, cultural background, or simply never having had an entry point into the screen industry. Since 2007, we've supported over 9,260 participants across Aotearoa, funded 58 short films, and helped build a pipeline of diverse filmmakers who are reshaping what Aotearoa storytelling looks like.

Day One Hāpai te Haeata's Live Project
Open The Door For Our Future Storytellers
Day One Hāpai te Haeata gives emerging filmmakers facing barriers to creative expression the tools, guidance, and platform to tell their stories on screen. We think of ourselves as the barefoot, backyard BBQ of the screen industry. A safe place to start with an open door. Our films explore identity, belonging, language, mental health, and the futures our rangatahi want to see. This year alone, Day One films reached thousands of people, and our alumni are premiering at international festivals and building real careers. But too many people who need us have never heard of us. Supporting this campaign funds more filmmakers, grows our reach across the motu, and will allow us to launch the Day One New Filmmaker Festival this November. Today could be someone's Day One. Help us open the door.
