Light up City Gallery Wellington
City Gallery Wellington | Visual Art
Wellington Te Whanganui-a-Tara
Overview
At City Gallery Wellington, we’re upgrading our lighting system to state-of-the-art, energy-efficient LEDs and we need your help. Each LED light costs $1,000. Your contribution will help reveal the refined details as artists intended, preserve art, and reduce environmental impact. This project ensures world-class presentation and protection for powerful works from Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond, aligning with our sustainability values and enhancing every visitor's experience.
“When visitors come into the Gallery, it’s really important for me that they’re able to see the work in the way that I intended—the texture of the paper, the colour. And it’s just as important that the lighting doesn’t damage the prints.”
— Conor Clarke, exhibiting artist Site Seeing at City Gallery Wellington
This isn’t just a technical upgrade—it’s an investment in:
Artist Vision – presenting exhibitions as the artist intended
Art Preservation – protecting fragile works from light damage
Visitor Experience – enhancing every moment through perfect illumination
Sustainability – cutting energy use and our environmental footprint
Your impact
Your gift today helps preserve art, protect the planet, and creates unforgettable experiences at City Gallery Wellington. This project is more than lighting – it’s about legacy. Together we can respect the artist’s vision, protect the art, and be kinder to our planet.
Create a legacy for Pōneke
Our goal is to complete the transition to our new lighting in time for the Gallery’s reopening in Civic Square in winter 2026. Every gift brings us one light closer. Thank you for helping to illuminate the future of contemporary art at City Gallery Wellington.
Project Updates
Thank you from all of us at City Gallery Wellington
Kia ora,
We were absolutely delighted to come into the office after the weekend to see that we have reached our target on Boosted.
This marks the first public fundraiser for the gallery’s return to Te Ngākau Civic Square in 2026 — and thanks to your generosity, we’re well on our way to lighting the space beautifully. There’s still more to do, but this is a powerful step to what promises to be a bold and inspiring new chapter.
In the coming months, we’ll be sharing exciting updates, including the artist for our first exhibition back in our iconic building, as we focus on rejuvenating the city and its economy with art and creativity.
There are many ways to stay involved, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you.
With heartfelt thanks and deep gratitude.
